The term “Over Provision” (OP) comes directly from the SSD drive vendors. I went to our HP Smart Storage Administrator team and here's what they said: I'll see what I can find out about the statement relative to the Smart Storage Administrator QuickSpec. I've been saying for awhile how freaking awesome 3PAR is - the fact that we're racking up awards against all-flash startups. And of course I just published a blog post about that I just published a blog post about that. One last "chirp" from me - HP 3PAR was just named Best of Show at the Flash Memory Summit. WRT to thin technologies with 3PAR, there's a really good (and long) white paper that describes it all. If you want to dig into the details, here's a blog post with a ton more. We also just announced 3.84TB drives that for everyone else are 20% less capacity. For example, our 1.9TB SSDs are 1.6TB for everyone else. Without a ton of details here, the SSDs we use with 3PAR are 20% larger than the industry standard SSDs. With HP 3PAR, we do something called Adaptive Optimization. Basically, we work with our SSD suppliers to get a unique to HP firmware that optimizes how we manage and provision the space used for both array level sparing and flash media sparing. I can talk to what we mean with HP 3PAR. With the Smart Array, I'll have to get an HP ProLiant expert to help with that.
